The steps of performing CPR are as follows:
1. Check for responsiveness and call for help.
2. Open the airway and check for breathing.
3. Start chest compressions.
4. Perform rescue breaths.
5. Continue CPR until help arrives.
The main difference between CPR for adults and infants is the technique used for chest compressions. For adults, the compressions should be about 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. For infants, the compressions should be about 1.5 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
Yes, you can perform CPR on someone with a pacemaker. The pacemaker will not be affected by the chest compressions or rescue breaths. It is important to follow the standard CPR protocol and call for medical help if the person does not respond.
CPR classes are for anyone who wants to learn the basic skills needed to help adults, children, and/or infants during cardiac emergencies.
BLS, Basic Life Support is designed for Healthcare Workers and First Responders (Police, Firefighters, EMS). The BLS certification covers includes additional life-saving techniques that meet competency verification, education, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
Both courses meet OSHA requirement, check with your employer if you are uncertain which class you need.
When deciding on which certification to pursue, it generally comes down to your career goals and/or your personal interests. If you are in the healthcare field or are a first responder, BLS certification may be best. For individuals who simply want to learn basic life-saving skills, CPR certification may be a good choice. The type of certification you will need will often come down to your particular industry's requirements. We always recommend checking with your employer on which course to take.
We know that people lead busy lives and our regularly scheduled classes may not work for you. This is why we offer the option to coordinate with us for a date and time that works better for you. We can do weekdays, evenings, and other Saturday mornings that might fit your schedule better!
As an authorized American Red Cross Training Center, we maintain a formal agreement with the Red Cross to provide certification courses in a variety of lifesaving skills and emergency response practices.
Unlike independent instructors, who typically operate as individuals and must recover the costs of purchasing and maintaining their own training equipment, our Training Center provides all required materials and equipment for participants. This allows us to offer a more convenient, cost-effective, and supportive learning experience while ensuring high-quality instruction.
In addition, our lead trainer, Cindy, is certified to train and mentor individuals who wish to become instructors themselves, helping expand the next generation of qualified lifesaving educators.
